Part-time legislator?

August was a whirlwind! Meetings and events started with an Elevate Rapid City Critical Issues Economic Development meeting. Then I flew out to a multiday course in Arlington, VA, at the Leadership Institute. I had online discussions with Sanford and Avera, and two meetings with different approaches to the education system in South Dakota, and another highlighting the implications of the expansion of Medicaid. I also attended the Central States Fair and manned the booth (**my daughter receiving two 1st place art ribbons, and two 2nd place**), and swung through the Elevate Chamber Mixer. I supported the Goat Gala fundraiser for the Charm Farm in Box Elder. I went to a meeting for the Black Hills Forum and Press Club and a Black Hills Military Advisory Coalition meeting to hear about innovations at Ellsworth Air Force Base. I also met with representatives of Western Governor's University on post-secondary education opportunities for South Dakotans, cooked up some Jamaican chicken chili and tiramisu, got my eldest ready for his first day of college, toured Garfield Dairy, as well as many (many) one-on-one meetings with constituents, other legislators, and organizations discussing needs in South Dakota. We have a "part-time" legislature in South Dakota, but many of my legislative colleagues are busy in their communities year-round.
